Mind blowing! This is the only word - or two, rather – that i can use to describe the first full-length album by the BLK JKS: After Robots. A mix of psychedelic rock/ jazz / prog / reggae and amazingness. Yes, i just created a word to describe how cool they are. Complete with the spice of African nuances and influences the 12 track album (which was recorded at Electric Lady studio) has showcased the band’s many musical talents, i especially enjoy the use of different composite timings used by each musician that comes together and forms a musical, visceral punch to the eardrums. For me, the best track is “Lakeside” which has the feel of Bloc party but with what can only be described as township whistling. While “Skeleton” is a mélange of reggae and prog, accomplished by blazing guitar technique. The album ends off with “Tselane” which is a children’s folktale about a child who recognises her mother by her singing. It is one the best finale’s to an album that i have so far heard. To be honest, i don’t want to compare BLK JKS to another band. They are unique and any comparison would be a blow to the testes. However, sadly, i have to confess that even tho i am South African, i was introduced to them by Spin magazine (who gave them critical praise by saying “BLK JKS emulate the grandiose rock gestures of their peers and contemporaries: TV on the Radio, Radiohead, U2”). i would like to thank Monsieurs Buthelezi, Mcata, Makananise and Ramoba (BLK JKS) for creating a truly legendary album that has become my album of the year and an important part of my collection. What are you waiting for?! Go buy After Robots! Don’t think about it, just go!
